ADHD & hyperactivity - Is exercise or homeopathy the answer?

Mar 9, 2019

Homeopathy has a radically different approach to resolving hyperactivity. It addresses the root cause rather than requiring you to make lifestyle adaptations.

If you or your child suffers with hyperactivity or restlessness associated with ADHD you’ve probably been recommended to take stimulant medication or to do more exercise.

You can’t go wrong with exercise of course. It hails numerous benefits from cardiovascular to neuropsychological. According to Ratey, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard - ‘Movement turns on the brain’s attention networks and eases other symptoms of ADHD, such as hyperactivity. Physical activity benefits the ADHD brain by elevating levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, two chemicals linked to attention’. These neurotransmitters are the same ones that drugs for depression and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder act on, which is why time on a treadmill or bicycle is akin to taking a mix of Prozac and Ritalin, Ratey says.

It’s common for parents of ADHD kids to say hardcore exercise is the only thing that will calm their child but if they dont get their two hours of exercise per day they will be bouncing off the walls.

What if your kid can’t exercise for some reason? What if they are simply exhausted from constant motion?.

This is where homeopathy comes in. Firstly the homeopath will want to ascertain what the cause of hyperactivity is. It could be anxiety, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalances or gut issues. The correctly prescribed homeopathic remedy can resolve each of these root causes. There is not one wonder drug but a remedy chosen to match you or your child’s individual symptoms (mental, emotional & physical) and the expression of hyperactivity and other ADHD traits.

Take for example the remedy Arsenicum alb - it is suited to individuals who are restless to the point of being maniac. They have a tendency to be anxious, tidy, meticulous, charming and vibrant but very nervous and easily frightened. They are more fearful at night, and often feel worse after midnight. They fear being alone and may have a feeling that something terrible might happen. Vexation can accompany anxiety. An Arsenicum album child never sits still, always doing something. Restlessness is often followed by exhaustion. Other mental symptoms include weakness of memory and being distracted.

I recently prescribed this remedy for a hyperactive boy, age 7. Mom just reported after 2 weeks:
“He is less irritable and there is less meltdowns...he is less hyper than before. He also seems more affectionate and playful with me too”.

It's still early days. I expect to see a lot more improvement in the coming months.
