The "Overloaded Nervous System": How Calcarea Carbonica Supports Children with ADHD, ASD & PANS/ PANDAS

Calcarea carbonica is one of my most recommended remedies working with children with ADHD, ASD and PANS/ PANDAS. Today I'm specifically talking about why it's so helpful in cases with a pattern of ADHD symptoms. The remedy is recommended based on the whole constitutional picture (pattern of physical, emotional, and behavioural traits), not on a diagnostic label.
Common indications for recommending Calc carb as a constitutional remedy:
🐚 The “overloaded nervous system” pattern
Calcarea carb is often associated with people who:
• Become mentally overwhelmed easily
• Have difficulty processing too much stimulation
• Feel mentally scattered or slow to organize thoughts
This can show up as:
• distractibility
• trouble focusing on tasks
• mental fatigue after concentration
• difficulty completing projects
Homeopaths interpret this as a weakness in mental “assimilation”—the person takes in too much input and struggles to organize it.
🐚 Anxiety-driven attention problems
Many people who fit the Calc carb picture have strong underlying anxiety about safety and stability.
Common traits include:
• fear of making mistakes
• worry about school or responsibilities
• needing reassurance
• feeling overwhelmed by expectations
This anxiety can make attention worse, because the brain is constantly scanning for threats instead of focusing on tasks.
🐚 Physical traits
Homeopaths usually look for physical signs that confirm the remedy choice. For Calc carb types these might include:
• sweating on the head or scalp, especially at night
• fatigue and low stamina
• tendency toward weight gain
• being chilly or sensitive to cold
• cravings for eggs or dairy
In practice children might present with:
• slower developmental pace
• difficulty with concentration but good persistence once engaged
• irritability when mentally overloaded
🐚 The “slow but steady” brain style
A key Calc carb theme is slow processing but deep learning
People may:
• take longer to understand new material
• struggle with multitasking
• perform better with structure and routine
When the nervous system is calmer, attention can improve significantly.
In Frei's refers to Calc carb as the most frequently prescribed remedy for hyperactive children. Traditionally, Calc carb is described as slow, steady, and easily exhausted, so calling it hyperactive seems contradictory.
Many children needing Calc carb show:
• constant physical movement
• restlessness
• impulsivity
• difficulty sitting still in school
But the quality of the hyperactivity is distinctive. The “driven but overwhelmed” type of hyperactivity
Calc carb hyperactivity tends to look like:
• busy but disorganized
• moving a lot but not necessarily thrill-seeking
• easily overstimulated
• becoming mentally overloaded
It’s often more like internal pressure than the explosive or mischievous energy seen in other remedies e.g. Tarentula, Tuberculinum.
Typical patterns might be:
• fidgeting constantly
• getting up from the seat repeatedly
• starting many tasks but finishing few
• becoming overwhelmed by noise or stimulation
Calc carb is associated with:
• slow processing
• difficulty assimilating stimuli
• anxiety about performance
• mental overload
So a child might become hyperactive because their nervous system is trying to cope with too much input. Instead of slowing down externally, the system spills over into movement.
🐚 Example of one of my clients positive response to Calc carb:
• Completing school work independently
• Increased focus/ attention
• Writing now legible & not a source of frustration
• Reduced hyperactivity, sitting for meals and school work
• Reduction in sensory issues
• Anxiety has lessened dramatically
• Positive progress with OCD
• Less shy / reserved/ cautious.
Calcarea carbonica is traditionally associated with children who are easily overwhelmed by sensory input, mentally overloaded, and slower to process or integrate new information. These children may respond well when their symptoms include restlessness combined with fatigue, anxiety about security, and difficulty organizing attention or development. The remedy is chosen when the child’s behavioral, emotional, and physical traits together match the Calcarea carbonica profile (see attached infographic), aiming to support better regulation and developmental balance.
