"We Need to Learn About Our Son from Scratch". Homeopathy's Role in a Complex PANS/PANDAS Recovery

Some cases don't have a single turning point. They have a long, winding road — with setbacks, small victories, hard months, and gradual shifts that only become visible in hindsight.
This is one of those cases.
It's also a story about what becomes possible when a family refuses to give up, and when different approaches are allowed to work together.
Meet Joseph
Joseph (not his real name) is a bright, creative, loving 9-year-old with ASD/PDA and a PANDAS diagnosis. When he's not in a flare, he loves learning and research, and building extraordinary things with Lego. He's happiest outdoors — constructing huts, lighting bonfires, collecting stones. He doesn't want to be seen as a child with Special Educational Needs, so he tends to mask at school. That masking often means more difficult behaviour at home.
He is also a child who, for years, was barely reachable.
The Before — His Daily Reality
Every Day
Rigid, argumentative behaviour — daily battles over the smallest things
High anxiety across multiple domains: health, social situations, separation
Crippling fear of bacteria and contamination — obsessive hand washing, clothing sorted into categories
OCD rituals that could not be skipped or modified without triggering a full crisis
Panic attacks, aggression, and meltdowns lasting hours
Recurring Strep infections every winter, each one sending him into neurological crisis
Daily neck pain with an irresistible urge to stretch it
Strange neurological sensations throughout his body — tingling, bone pain, skin sensitivity
Prone to accidents; oversensitive to every scratch and minor bump
Frequent urination
During Flares
The picture became even more extreme:
Verbal and physical aggression toward every family member — the whole household walking on eggshells
Spitting, slapping, following family members around refusing to give them space
Mean, intentionally hurtful — and yet during brief calmer moments, apologising and saying he loved them
Unable to leave the house, eat school lunches, or sleep without a two-hour duvet ritual
Said he had lost the ability to play. His mother agreed this was true.
At 9.5 years old, unable to set out his own pyjamas or clear his dishes
Exhausted by the feeling that life was deeply unfair to him
What Had Already Been Tried
This family had left no stone unturned. Before working with me, they had explored:
10+ different antibiotics and antifungals, including long-term prophylactic azithromycin
Regular antiparasitic treatment
Steroids, antihistamines, daily melatonin (neurologist-prescribed)
1.5 years of herbal Lyme and co-infection protocol
Rotating antifungals for candida and mould
A full nutritional supplement protocol based on OAT testing and Hair Mineral Analysis — 20+ supplements daily at the point we began working together
Naturopathy, cranial osteopathy, acupuncture, bioresonance, and counselling
Consultations with a Lyme specialist, immunologist, neurologist, urologist, and PANS/PANDAS specialist
MRI under sedation, EEG, multiple swabs, blood panels, urine cultures, and air quality testing
Complete home overhaul following the discovery of three years of hidden mould exposure
Gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free diet
School support plan and specialist counselling
The commitment of this family is extraordinary. And yet, despite everything, Joseph continued to struggle.
The Homeopathic Journey — Progress That Wasn't Linear
There were hard months — a severe aggression flare, a new diagnosis of Eosinophilic Oesophagitis, a difficult allergy season. Progress moved in layers, not in a straight line.
But running alongside those difficult periods were signs that something deeper was shifting:
Susceptibility to Strep began to reduce
Ibuprofen — previously needed in 3–5 day emergency courses — replaced by single doses of Belladonna and Apis
Tics reducing; the jaw-stretching tic resolved entirely
First proper fever since 2022 — a sign of the immune system beginning to regulate itself
Weight gain for the first time
Able to cry and process emotions in layers — something not previously possible for him
Brief windows of the warm, affectionate boy underneath — and those windows getting longer each time
A Collaborative Approach
Homeopathy was very much part of a wider collaborative effort. In a case this complex, a multidisciplinary approach is often essential — and this case was no exception.
Following a severe flare, I referred Joseph for Autonomic Response Testing with a colleague. Together we developed a protocol to address priority issues, including Strep, retroviruses, and geopathic stress. His broader treatment protocol included Strep tilch, an antibiotic rebalancing course, several homeopathic remedies, herbal support, broccoli sprout powder, an inflammatory protocol with essential oils, and binders. Around the same time, he also began an SSRI and acupuncture.
Healing at this level is rarely the work of one modality alone. It takes a team, a committed family, and a child who — even at his most unreachable — is worth every bit of the effort.
The After — Most Recent Appointment
"He is like a new child. We need to learn about our son from scratch."
Aggression: gone
OCD: residual only
Walking home from school independently
Going to the shops with friends, buying his own things
Eating school lunches without anxiety
Washing fruit and eating it — no fear of contamination
Wants to go to the school disco on his own
Asked to go to football for the first time
Putting pictures on his bedroom wall, being creative, open to new things
No full PANS/PANDAS flare despite a recent lingering cough illness
There is still some way to go. But this family — after years of searching, trying, and refusing to stop — are finally beginning to meet their son.
If you are navigating a complex PANS/PANDAS case and wondering whether homeopathy might have a role to play, I'd love to talk.
